Direct Competitors Tier 1 — Watch closely

Finch Technologies / Gathr

gathrdocs.com · finch-technologies.com

Bank Statement OCR Reg 23A NCA Compliance Fraud Detection

Modular digital onboarding and affordability platform for SA lenders. Module 1 handles bank statements via USSD, online banking login, PDF upload, or email. Handles Capitec scans (admits OCR "is not perfect"). Covers FNB, Nedbank, Standard Bank; ABSA in pipeline.

Clients: MTN (nationwide via TransUnion), MPOWA, solar financing providers. Founded 2016 (originally Fincheck).

High threat — most directly competitive

OMS Africa / OBSE

oms.africa/obse

Bank Statement OCR Tampering Detection

OCR and data aggregation for SA bank statements. Handles PDFs, scanned images, stamped documents. Detects salaried vs non-salaried income, filters internal transfers, includes fraud detection and behavioural profiling. Founded 2018.

Not a full affordability platform — a specialised extraction engine that feeds into LOS systems.

Medium threat — extraction only, no full pipeline

iTuring

ituring.ai

AI Ingestion Affordability Model NCA + FSCA TCF

AI-powered NCA affordability models. Three-layer architecture: data ingestion (bank statements replacing consumer declarations), affordability model (conservative + custom calibration), explainability engine (plain-language decline reasons).

Deep NCA domain knowledge but limited evidence of live clients or scale.

Medium threat — strong positioning, early stage

EvalFin

evalfin.com

NCA Section 81

Credit assessment workflow automation for SA credit brokers and providers. Replaces PDF/spreadsheet workflows with structured databases. Provides NCA Section 81 affordability tooling, audit trails, and compliance gap detection.

More "credit operations software" than document extraction. Adjacent, not directly competitive.

Low-medium threat — workflow tool, not extraction

Credit Bureaus Tier 2 — Partners, not competitors

Experian South Africa

experian.co.za

Trusso Categorisation Verdus Aggregation

Trusso: Automated categorisation of raw transaction data into income/expenditure in real time. Verdus: Data aggregation managing exchange between lenders and banks. Has StatementOCR in Australia — unclear if brought to SA.

Medium-high threat if they localise Australian OCR product

TransUnion South Africa

transunion.co.za

Document Verification Open Banking

Document Verification validates ID docs against TransUnion data (selfie + liveness). Open Banking service shares account details and transaction analysis electronically. Partners with Finch/Gathr for the MTN rollout.

Medium — channel partner, not extraction player

Datanamix

datanamix.com

Affordability Service Bureau Data

Registered SA bureau. Affordability Assessment Service calculates discretionary income using gross/net income, MLE regs, and total debt. Uses bureau data, not document extraction. Good for debt counsellors and restructure proposals.

Low — complements, doesn't compete

XDS (Mettus) / Credifin

xds.co.za

Bureau Digital Onboarding

XDS building digital onboarding and trade credit risk management with automated credit policy rules. Credifin (formerly Compuscan) is one of the four major SA bureaus. Data providers and integration targets, not extraction competitors.

Low — integration partners

Open Banking / Infrastructure Tier 3 — Long-term disruption

Stitch

stitch.money · $21M Series A (2022)

Payments Open Banking API

SA-founded payments and open banking infrastructure. API-based access to bank transaction history, balances, KYC, and affordability checks. If banks open APIs widely, you don't need OCR — but SA has no mandatory open banking regulation yet.

Low short-term, medium-high long-term

Yodlee (Envestnet)

yodlee.com

Global Aggregation Screen Scraping

Global open banking / financial data aggregation. Active in SA market. Supports screen-scraping and API-based data access. Same long-term disruption vector as Stitch.

Low — long-term structural threat

International Players Tier 4 — Limited SA presence

Arya.ai

api.arya.ai · India

Bank Statement Analyser ZA

Has a specific "Bank Statement Analyser South Africa" API product. Claims to handle diverse SA bank formats without manual template config. Mentions POPIA compliance. Depth of SA coverage (especially Capitec scans) is unverified. Lacks local relationships.

Medium — SA-specific product, unproven depth

Ocrolus

ocrolus.com · USA

Document AI Fraud Detection

Gold standard in US lending document automation. 1,800+ doc types, 100+ cash flow metrics. Listed on Capterra SA but no evidence of SA bank template coverage or local office.

Low — no SA-specific coverage

Monocle Solutions

monoclesolutions.com · SA/UK/Europe

Consulting Custom OCR

20-year consulting firm implementing OCR solutions for financial services clients (e.g. Discovery Life). Not a product company — they build custom. Validates market demand but not a product competitor.

Low — consultants, not a product

Loan Origination Systems Tier 5 — Distribution channels

Creditec

creditec.co.za

End-to-end loan management for microfinance. AI-driven automation, document management. Potential integration partner or acquirer.

ACPAS

acpas.co.za

Bespoke software for SA financial institutions. Loan origination and compliance. Potential integration partner.

MIP Holdings

mip.co.za

Loan management system with origination, credit risk, collections, compliance. Potential integration partner or acquirer.

Market Gaps — Where Affy Wins

Payslip Extraction

Wide open. No SA-specific payslip OCR product exists. Thousands of employer formats, no standard. Affy has 4 SA format parsers with OCR fallback — nobody else does this.

Multi-Document Orchestration

Nobody pipelines bank statements + payslips + ID + proof of residence with cross-validation. Gathr's modules are siloed. Affy's 6-stage pipeline with cross-reference checks is unique.

Scanned / Image Documents

30%+ of uploads fail because they're scans. Capitec (22M customers, lower LSM) is the biggest source. Only Gathr is actively tackling this and admits imperfect results.

Full Stack: Extract → Calculate → Explain

Extraction alone isn't the product. The value is extraction + categorisation + Reg 23A + explainable decline + audit trail. Only iTuring attempts this, and they appear early-stage.

Questions to Ask on Calls

  1. "What are you using for affordability today?" If they say "Gathr" or "OBSE" — the space is tighter than it looks. If "manual spreadsheets" — that's the opening.
  2. "How are you handling payslips?" If the answer is "manually" — that's your opening. Nobody has cracked SA payslip extraction.
  3. "What percentage of document uploads fail?" High failure rates (especially Capitec scans) = pain point Affy addresses directly.
  4. "Are you looking at open banking?" If they're waiting for Stitch/bank APIs — they're not buying an extraction tool soon. If "too far away" — document extraction is still the play.
  5. "How long does an affordability assessment take end-to-end?" Manual processes take 20-45 minutes per application. Automation target is under 2 minutes. The delta is the value proposition.
